Tick-less Clock: Another Benefit to the Intel® Xeon® 5500 Processor Family
sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Intel Corporation

Currently when OpenSolaris is idle it is really energy efficient. Despite this, there is actually background activity that does exist. The majority of this background noise is from a clock feature that fires periodically, 100 times a second that does all sorts of house keeping such as tick processing and clocks. The downfall is that most of the time there is no housekeeping to do.

Having a tick-less clock would:

  • Improve power management
  • Speed up virtual environments
  • Improve multiple instances of Solaris when in use
Watch this video to learn more about this new development and how to get involved.
